RICE UNIVERSITY

Monday, November 11 – Since we arrived in the Houston area, it has been nonstop visiting with our daughter, Carrie. She and her friends are always on the move.

Saturday found us at a beer festival. Even though the sign in the photo below says Hill Country, Houston is definitely not in Hill Country.

We spent the day in Houston on Monday visiting with Carrie. We spent the morning at her new apartment in Mid-Town Houston. She's right in the thick of things in the middle of a very exciting city. She's adapted well to big city living. Her apartment is very nice with plenty of parking, (Paul loves the ability to park his big ole' truck in a safe parking garage), an entertainment room, two pools, a computer area, two workout rooms, security systems, and cable TV all in a gated building.

After a short shopping trip, we returned to Carrie's apartment to park the truck. We then walked the two blocks to jump on the train ($1.25 for 4-hours of travel) to visit Rice University.

Rice University has a beautiful campus located right in the city of Houston.

Many of the buildings have the Rice mascot carved in the pillars.

Rice is a is a private research university located on a 295-acre campus. The university is situated near the Houston Museum District and adjacent to the Texas Medical Center. It has a gorgeous walking paths throughout the campus.

We did a pretty extensive walking tour of the campus seeing many of the 70 buildings, the beautiful grounds, and the athletic complex.

After visiting the University, we walked around Rice Village, the entertainment/restaurant/bar section of campus.

Not too many campus can boost about having a violin shop.

Now this is unusual.

We even stopped for a cool beer and to talk with our other daughter, Kelly, back in Ohio, where they are getting ready for a couple inches of S@%W this evening.

The flowers are still blooming in this area. Carrie and Marsha just couldn't resist a photo op.

After a couple screw-ups trying to find the right train, (We had to get on and off the train a couple times before we were heading in the right direction.), we jumped off again in Mid-Town where we grabbed a lunch/dinner at Pho Sa'i Go'n, a Vietnamese Noodle House. Carrie tried her best to teach Marsha how to use chopsticks – all in vain! Paul just asked for a fork, and Marsha finally gave in and got a set of silverware too!

With the famous Houston rush hour(s) behind us, we then jumped in the truck about 6:30 to head back to the RV Park. Unfortunately, we caught up with the traffic backed up behind three accidents. Golly, it would be wonderful to do this driving twice a day, five days a week! We just took our time and eventually found our exit and the Forest Retreat RV Park. Good to be home!

Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y'all back real soon. Have a great day!

  1. Carrie and her friends look like they could be from the TV show "Friends"!
Can't imagine battling that traffic back and forth to work every day.

  4. I think I read somewhere that Rice University is one of the lower-cost private universities. I wonder if that is still true? I know that it has an excellent reputation!

  6. Very nice that you got to hang out with Carrie and some of her friends. Helps keep us young:) Sounds like a wonderful apartment right in the middle of all the action. Nice amenities!

Rice has a beautiful campus! I love the very different design of several of the buildings, not your typical campus architecture. What does the Istanbul Grill and Deli say about some of the student population!?

I'm sure Kelly appreciates the photo of her sister in shorts when she is putting on her mittens, hat, gloves, and boots!!!

I can tell how hard you are trying to master those chop sticks. Deep concentration going on there. I would have needed the fork, also!

  7. I sure enjoyed your campus tour - what a beautiful place. Love the architecture and the covered walkway and all the green. Looks like a neat train too and the price is sure right.

  8. One of the best perks of this lifestyle is getting to spend time with family and friends all across the country. Lucky Carrie to have you there for a long visit.

Will have to remember to tour Rice when we are in Houston next time.

  9. Well, I think many of us really did do traffic like that for five days a week. I'm glad that part is behind us!

  10. Looks like you had a great time with your daughter and her friends.
Not much for that traffic thats why I lived and worked in a small village for many years. Peace and quiet...

  12. The green grass and flowers look so pretty. Not much green grass here, but I guess that will change as soon as we head back to Florida.

  13. The Rice campus sure is beautiful.

How does one eat soup and noodles with chopsticks? I'd starve!

  14. What a fun post! Your daughter is beautiful! I just love walking Rice University and appreciated your pictures as a reminder of its beauty. The MOB Marching Owl Band is a treat to watch as I remember from the old SW Conference days when Texas A&M played Rice. The noodles sure looked plentiful and yummy!

  15. Good to read I am not the only sissy who HATES the traffic around Houston. Len's daughter went to UH and moved into that area. She now lives south of Houston but travels into the city every day to work. Gads!

    I love Vietnamese soups. Yummy.

  16. One advantage of eating with chopsticks is you have to slow down so you get a chance to realize you are full before you eat everything on the table. At least I do; I've seen people eat amazingly fast with them.

  17. Having been in the Houston traffic twice this past week, I'm going to see if someone else wants to take the van back to Balcones next week. ;)

  18. Sounds like a very active day and always fun when it includes one of the kids. I'll stick with a regular fork also. Glad you made it through the traffic and won't have to deal with it daily.

  20. I would love to visit Houston again. It has been many years since I spent time there and it was during the summer, not the most pleasant time to explore. We love to explore universities and this one looks wonderful. Vietnamese restaurants are always on the list for us, pho being one of our favorite foods.
