HOUSTON RODEO

Wednesday, March 22 – After we visited many of the events going on at the Houston Livestock Show, we headed over to the rodeo. The Houston rodeo is held in the Reliant Football Stadium. It holds over 72,000 people, and it was nearly full. Amazing!

We enjoyed the steer roping, bucking bronco riding, bull riding, barrel races, and more. We particularly enjoy the girls barrel racing and the buckboard races.

The ladies could really ride! Several broke the record.

These kids get a chance to wrestle down a calf and keep it. It is a riot watching them.

After the rodeo is the concert. Tonight was Chris Young. We decided not to stay for the concert and beat the thousands and thousands of people to the exit. It was a very long day but well worth it. The rodeo is a blast!

The rides were packed when we left at 9:30.

We'll be staying at the Houston Elks Lodge until mid or late April. If you're in the area give us a shout!

Thanks to Mary and Marlene for sending Marsha the name of our mystery bird. It is a Loggerhead Shrike, also known as a "thorn bird". The Loggerhead Shrike skewers their kill on thorns or barbed wire or wedge them into tight places for easy eating. What a way to eat a meal.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y’all back real soon. Have a great day!

  1. What an awesome rodeo and though the crowds were big, it made for a more festive rodeo. It is hard to imagine a crowd the size that goes to college football games taking in the rodeo, but that is Texas. Glad you had so much fun and beat the crowds out.

  2. Love your header. We went to many rodeos when we lived in Texas. Well, we also went to many when we lived in Washington. Timing is everything. However, I think the most fun was the one we did by the local cowboys in Hunt, Texas .... amazing!

  3. What a fun day! Our friend, Barb, use to be a barrel racer right up until they retired and went fulltime a couple years ago. I don't blame you for heading out before the concert.

  4. What a fun day enjoying all the rodeo events, good idea to beat the traffic out of there.

  5. We love a good rodeo. We went to the Calgary Stampede last year, what a great rodeo. If you want to see the greatest rodeo as far as the riders, go to the National Finals in Vegas in December. It has the top 15 riders for the year. Not the other shows that Houston has but you get to see the best riders in the world.

  6. I found myself wondering about the book The Thorn Birds and wondering if someone got skewered.

  7. Sounds to me like you would really enjoy going to the famous Calgary Stampede. It might be something to look into sometime in the future!
