Saturday, November 23 – Marsha's been busy, busy, busy! Her computer died on Monday, dead motherboard. It was time to replace her aging laptop with a new one. Buying the new computer is an “ouch” on the wallet, but that's the easy part. Now she has to load everything to make it useable. That is absolutely CRAZY!!! It's like buying a car without tires, or a transmission. Paul just doesn't understand this.
Regardless, Marsha has been using the DSL line at the clubhouse to download software and other updates, amazing.....a new computer needs updates. She broke away from the HP brand name and bought a Samsung. She read rave reviews about her choice. She loves the feel of the keyboard. Yes, it came with OS 8, which now causes her some additional headaches. The first issue she ran into was our printer software…not suitable for OS 8. She went on line to research update drivers. This is just one example of why it takes so long to set up a new computer.
It's been three days now, and Marsha is still at it! She had the hard drive removed from her old computer and placed in an NexStar TX 2.5” hard drive enclosure. Now she can transfer “stuff” from her old hard drive to her new computer. Will she ever be done???
Marsha wants to share her opinion of OS 8…..not difficult to learn at all. She can’t get over how many people are having so many problems with it. One girl here in the campground said she is having a difficult time leaning how to use the new operating system. All she wants is her desktop back. Marsha showed her how to hold the window key down and hit D…desktop appears. She showed her how to pin her applications to the task bar. Debbi is now a very happy camper. She says it looks just like her old desktop…imagine that.
Paul's been diddling around the RV, cleaning his truck, reading, and snoozing in his zero gravity chair. At least the weather has been beautiful here in Houston.
TIDBIT: November 22, 2013, marks our 1500th day on the road.
We will post a new blog hopefully very soon.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y’all back real soon. Have a great day!
I get very frustrated with technology and admire folks that seem to have little difficulty figuring out new programs. Have fun with the new 'toy' :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that Marsha appreciates the fact that Windows 8 can be so easily configured to look like the old familiar Windows desktop. It continues to mystify me why so many folks don't understand that or are unable to figure it out.
ReplyDeleteSetting up a new computer can be time-consuming but worth it in the end because of all the junk you get rid of from the old one.
I found too that setting up a new computer does take a very long time.
ReplyDeleteBut was amazed at setting up my Macbook over 4 years ago, so simple.
Then when I installed a larger hard drive, just hooked up my backup drive and less than two hours later it was all done by itself, programs, drivers and everything.
But still do use Suzie's windows computer once in a while so I don't forget how much I dislike windows.
Hope all get going good for Marsha soon.
It only took 1500 days on the road to wear out the laptop. Congratulations to the two of you o your anniversary.
ReplyDelete"Diddling" must mean something different to what we know. ;)
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Marsha! Dave recently bought a Samsung laptop, also. Seems like they make good computers!
ReplyDeletewell now you done gone and jinxed us with the weather. . .phooey! :D
ReplyDeleteMy latest computer has Windows 8. . .took me a couple of days to work it out. . .but I like it fine. . .would have really enjoyed it with my Touch Screen on my Desktop. . .but alas. . .the desktop died. . .which is how I ended up with a laptop. . .
Good luck to you Marsha with transferring everything. . .better you than me! :D
Change is never easy, especially with computers...and when you have very little technology experience (like me). Glad you are able to tackle your new computer and help others. Good Luck!!
ReplyDeleteI know I need a new computer. This Toshiba I've had for last few years is continually giving me issues. yea, I know I need a new one. But I also know I lose patience when I feel comfortable with the operating system I know and then need to learn anew. Marsha has lots more patience than me I am sure.
ReplyDeleteYou're not the only one having computer issues. I went through what youre going through, just 6 months ago, and now my latest HP is giving me troubles too.. My ntuser.dat file got corrupted somehow, so I cant log in to my profile. This laptop has Windows 8, and Im not crazy about it, but its not that difficult. Im definitely going with a different name on my next laptop. Maybe a Samsung... I will wait and see how yours works for you.
ReplyDeleteI don't like Windows 8, but when we bought the computer last year we bought a years of Geek Squad. Best purchase ever made. They finally figured out why the printer wasn't working, and had installed a fix to make the computer boot up to the desktop.
ReplyDeleteThere is an update to 8.1 that will also do this. Getting used to it now.
Are you guys going to Arizona?
i love my samsung laptop even though it is now 3 years old...
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about getting all the stuff off your old computer and make sure it'll run on the new OS. That's one reason I dread changing. It can take a long time to get everything just like you want it. However, I must admit that I have Windows 8 on my tablet and I really like it. It is easy to use and easy to get around in.
ReplyDeleteIt's not so much that Windows 8 is difficult - it's the change that's hard - at least for me. I get frustrated easily with having to learn new technology. Couldn't be that I'm getting old could it. But it will be good to have a blog show up on the roll.
ReplyDeleteMy HP died and I am needing to purchase a new one. Just may look at the Samsung. I seem to have a computer day every 2 or three years. I dread the transferring information. Right now, I have stolen John's computer and that fine for right now. Of course, he doesn't think so.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't happy when my laptop died this past summer. I was happy that it died while I was visiting my oldest son. He's an IT guy, so it was a breeze for him to get everything set up for me. :)
ReplyDeleteNew computers are faster....after you get everything installed and files up to speed! Tedious, but it will be worth it. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe had to buy a computer about three months ago after our old one got the blue screen of death. Now my hubby is like having my own personal "Geek Squad" and even he is having issues with this OS 8. He figured out how to make the desktop stay up all the time!! And there's an app he downloaded that is a start button: pokki. I don't know what I'd do without him! Hope you're figuring it out and it's becoming easier.
ReplyDeleteComputers; helpful but so annoying most of the the time.
