A NICE, EASY DRIVE THROUGH TEXAS

Wednesday, March 18 – We got another early start on our travels this morning, pulling out of the Roswell, NM, Elks Lodge bright and early. We pass through another time zone again today. When we cross the Texas state line, we will be in the Central Time Zone .

Today's travel through Texas was very enjoyable. We stayed on US-380 most of the day. What a nice road. Texas’ back-roads are quite nice and sure beats traveling on the interstates. We jumped on I-20 in Abilene for a short jump to Baird, TX.

We are staying at the Baird Motor Inn & RV Park. We have a 50 amp, FHU site. The sites and streets are gravel with a small patch of grass between the sites and small trees between each site. The price is reasonable, especially considering it is almost full with full-time workers. There were only three sites available for over-night stays. This park is fine for an over-night stay. Texas is getting tough to find a reasonably priced campground for short over-night stays. I guess this might be true for the entire country.

NOTE: To clear up a possible misunderstanding from yesterday’s blog:….The Radio Astronomy Observatory is located on the Plains of San Agustin, between the towns of Magdalena and Datil, some 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. We copied the section entitled…Why did they choose Roswell, NM, for the VLA site? directly from the official website. It states that it is located in Roswell, NM. We found it was about 20 miles East of Datil.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y’all back real soon. Have a great day!

  1. For us, driving across Texas is like an endurance test:)

  2. It is just nice to get off the main highways and have some nice scenery around and take it a little slower:)

  3. Some of the backroads really are nice and some, not so much. The Elks around Dallas are cheap at $10 and $15 a night.

  4. I am behind in blog reading. Glad to see you made it to the VLA. We found it quite interesting, too. You didn't miss anything by not getting pie in Pie Town. We had some at Pie-O-Neer and not only was it $5 a slice, it wasn't even that good.
Hope your back is feeling better!

  5. I may change my mind about pie after reading Gayle's comment - $5 a slice. No pie is that good except my Dad's. You're definitely covering some territory. Texas is just a huge state to get across. Not sure when we'll ever get there again.

  6. Sounds like a nice drive, especially with good weather.
We like to stick to our membership parks, that makes it very reasonable for us and we have lots to choose from.

  7. Sounds like you guys are hightailing it back east. We ran into the problem with the campgrounds full of workers the last couple years in West Texas. Between state parks requiring reservations and workcampers it's becoming more difficult to travel and stop where you want. Have fun.

  8. I am not sure why, but I detest driving through Texas. They need to make it a smaller state with more to see and do. LOL

  9. I get extremely antsy driving across Texas. Hope all is going well with your journey and that Marsha's back is now better.

  10. Marsha, I hope your back has been stretched regularly. Those are the ailment that scares the heck out of me due to our active lifestyle.
    Hope you are feeling better.
