Tuesday, February 21 - We returned to Tucson Mountain Park this morning to hike among the Saguaro. It is a very short drive from Justin's Diamond J Campground to the desert full of trails. Actually, we could have walked right out the back of the campground into Tucson Mountain Park but that would have made today's hike way to long.
This is a very rocky trail. Have your boots on.
The terrain changed as we changed elevations.
We decided to cut across country making our own trail. We ended up wandering around the desert until we found a road. We then continued across country keeping the road in sight as a marker. After another mile or so, we stumbled on the truck parked beside a picnic area.
This guy sure has the arms.
If you do this trail, be careful of the fishhook cacti. They are close to the trail.
The birds were enjoying the gorgeous day too.
We say good bye to Tucson. Tomorrow, Thursday, we will be in Sedona, AZ. The weather is much colder. We will make the best of it for sure.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y’all back real soon. Have a great day!
A black cardinal...wow!! Not only have I never seen one before but didn't know they existed. Cool!! Cardinals are one of my favorite birds.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice day for a hike and then ending with friends....priceless!!
It is too bad that Tucson Mountains Park doesn't have any trail markers. I imagine they did at one time but the bikers were probably hard on them. Too bad you didn't hike the new section in Robles Pass. The trails are perfect for anyone, no one seems to know about it yet, and every intersection has a great map. The trails combine for anywhere from three to six miles. And the saguaro are everywhere!! Oh, well...next time! Enjoy Sedona!! Such a beautiful place. Thanks for coming over for Happy Hour:)
ReplyDeleteI believe the bird is a Phainopepla. Check it out. They were plentiful in the California desert when we worked at the nature center.
ReplyDeleteI, too, never saw a bird like that whatever it's name. If we ever get back to that area, I hope we get to see one.
ReplyDeleteLove the Arizona cactus. They are so beautiful. That's one reason we enjoy being at Diamond J's
ReplyDeleteSedona is beautiful...looking forward to your pics!
ReplyDeletesorry we missed you in Tucson, I saw you two leave about 7:00 and had hoped to see you before you left... oh well, somewhere else down the road I guess...
ReplyDeleteIt nice chatting with you two yesterday afternoon. Hope all went well with your laundry adventure. Hopefully our paths will cross again and we can visit some more.
ReplyDeleteSafe travels.
Never heard of or seen a black cardinal! It's hard to beat out the red cardinal...a very favorite of mine, especially in the winter. Beautiful hike! Looking forward to your posts from Sedona. Love that area!
ReplyDeleteWe find ourselves missing the desert.
ReplyDeleteOh wow. That bird is fabulous, so of course I needed to look it up. You are so lucky to have seen it. It's habitat range in the United States is very, very small. I've added it to my list. When we make it back to that area, I would love to see it for myself, so I could add it to my birding life list. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful hike, enjoy Sedona, more amazing scenery.
ReplyDeleteWe are so envious of your Happy Hours. They wouldn't be much fun in the snow.
