RETIRED/RETARDED GRANDPARENTS

Recently we read a cute story about third grader describing his recent holiday experience. Thanks to Dwight & Carroll aka Fester & CC, "The Next Chapter" Rated RV-13, for allowing us to share it with our readers. Hope you all enjoy it as much as we did.

"RETARDED" GRANDPARENTS
Written by a third grader, on what his grandparents do.

After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holiday away from school. One child wrote the following:

We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house, but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Arizona. Now they live in a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like grass.

Pictures taken from their blog.

They ride around on their bicycles, and wear name tags, because they don't know who they are anymore. They go to a building called a wreck center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now, they do exercises there, but they don't do them very well.

There is a swimming pool too, but they all jump up and down in it with hats on. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out, and go cruising in their golf carts.

Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night - early birds. Some of the people can't get out past the man in the doll house. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center for pot luck.

My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and, says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let people out, so they can visit their grandchildren.

Wednesday, February 9 – What the heck is up with this CRAZY WEATHER???? It started out at 66 degrees this morning and by noon it's down to 39 degrees and by tonight.....28 degrees. We don't like this one bit.....and the darn wind is blowing like crazy! Guess we can cross South Texas off our future winter stay list! If Mexico had there act together, we'd be considering heading further south......LOL

Went to a 50th Anniversary party at the Activity Center for friends Winnie & Les. What a great time with plenty of delicious food, tasty adult beverages, laughs with many friends, and country dancing. Congratulations Winnie & Les and thanks for a wonderful party!

Thursday, February 10 - Another blustery day here in the Valley.....brrrrrrrrrr! Temperatures in the low 30's this morning with some mighty COLD wind chill factors!

Marsha had her first lesson on making a pine needle basket. She is using a needle basket kit for her first time. Pine needles are available to purchase, but since she had these, the kit was much cheaper.

Supplies for the basket.

Marsha and her teacher, Karen. Thanks Karen for all your help!

She is very excited about this project. Marsha came home with two rows completed in TWO hours. Looks like this is going take a bit longer than she expected.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y’all again real soon. Have a great day!

WORK….WORK….WORK!!!!

Thursday, February 3 – Marsha is at again. She doesn’t have enough to do with her books, prayer shawls, aerobics, volunteering to help with the sock hop, etc. She now is going to make needle baskets! Yes, you read right…baskets made from pine needles. The gal across the street, Angie, is going to teach her how to make them. Angie collected all the needles when she in Rick visited Oregon, Washington and California. Angie and Marsha did the first step this morning before aerobics. They had to soak the needles for a couple of hours. They then divided up the 1,000’s of needles.

Second step is to take all the tips off each needle while they are soft, hence the reason for soaking the needles.

Marsha worked hours to clean all those needles. She had to use a plastic knife to stripe the needles. She and Angie did order a special instrument that will help speed this process up.

She says that this is a ton more work than she expected but can’t wait to start sewing the basket together. Just so she doesn’t ask Paul to help, she can keep all the fun to herself!

Friday, February 4- WOW…look what we woke up to this morning.

ice-1

ice

Unbelievable! All the on ramps to I-83 were closed here in the Rio Grande Valley. Many areas were without electric late last night and all day today. Marsha had to work to scrap all the ice off the windows before she could head to aerobics.

Kelly called us last night and said they canceled school for today. She couldn’t believe they would do that when yesterday it wasn’t even raining. It paid off though…Houston had ice.

We were to attend a dance at another park, but they had to cancel. The park didn’t have an electric all day and were not sure when it would be turned back on.

Saturday, February 5 - We came to the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas to get away from old man winter......... Well, he found us! Dag Blast It....it sure has been cold the last three days. Thank goodness it's starting to warm up and should be back in the mid-70's today. This is all because Pittsburgh and Green Bay came to Dallas for the Super Bowl. Texas wanted to make them feel at home by having snow and ice.....JEESH!

In the morning, we went to Don Wes Flea Market in Donna, TX. The Flea Market is a typical one. We did purchase several things for the MH.

Yes, that is Paul spending some of our hard-earned money.

Just about anything you can want!

Ended up being an AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL day. Paul played some Pickleball and Marsha enjoyed the sun.

Tonight we went to the Activity Center for a country dance with Sipes. The group was fairly good.

We went with a group of friends. Angie and Rick lived across the street from us. We had a wonderful time with all.

angie-rick

We got to try out our Country dancing that we learned the last two weeks at our lessons. We burned up that dance floor!!!!

Monday, February 7 – Back to Mexico!!! We are back in Progreso, MX today for Marsha's dental work. She has some crown work to be started.

Dr. de la Rosa Sanez and Marsha

dentist-and-marsha

Marsha was in the dental chair from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The dentist did the preparation work and installed temporary crowns. She was very happy with the service. She said, “Believe it or not, he didn’t ask me a ton of questions while working in my mouth. He talked to his assistants (all in Spanish) and let me just hold my mouth open.”  She'll return next Tuesday for the permanent crowns and to conclude her dental work.

While at the dentist, Paul wonder around town. He did get a hair cut right next door to Marsha’s dentist office. It was a WHOPPING $5.00….that included a back massage too!!

Marsha was ready to do some shopping after her appointment. So, we headed out searching for the items on our “list”. First stop was lunch at the Red Snapper. They have two for one margaritas and delicious Mexican dishes. They also had entertainment for enjoyment during lunch.

Looking down the street from the balcony of the restaurant.

Then we strolled among the shops looking for a table cloth and a table runner for the counter top. We found both after a little “dealing” with the merchant....you are expected to bicker a little bit on the price. If you ask for too low of a price, the merchant simple will tell you he can't go that low and offer his “best” price.

Bella enjoying our new purchases.

We also purchased some gifts for some special people and continued on searching for cowboy boots. We each found a pair that will be great when we head to the Texas dance and honky tonks.

If you have never been to Mexico, here is a sure sign that you are there.

Around 3:30 p.m., we called it a day, paid our 25¢ to cross the boarder, passed easily through the Checkpoint showing our passports and telling the officer what we purchased (no alcohol, meds or tobacco). After a short walk across the Bridge (Rio Grand River), we decided not to get the 50¢ banana splits at the North end of the Bridge. We jumped in our car for the 40 minute ride home.

Tuesday, February 8 – Clean-up Day! Yep, we have a slight mess on our hands, and today we are going to give a shot at cleaning it up. Several days ago, Paul, while doing some routine maintenance, decided to clean some corrosion off the battery terminals. After spraying the area well with a water/baking soda mixture, he hosed off the batteries carefully and then sprayed down the driveway. Well an hour or so later, when the water dried....HORRORS!!!!

Norm's driveway had a rust colored stain where the water had been. Paul first thought it was from Iron in the water, but after talking with Norm, learned it was from the acid washed off the batteries......OH MY GOSH!

Sunday, after church, we tested several cleaning solutions obtained off the internet. After scrubbing for hours on our hands and knees, we found CLR got the best results using a wire brush and scrubbing like mad. We scrubbed for about four hours until our poor surgically repaired backs cried out “UNCLE.” Many people stopped and offered support and ideas. We were told that with the hot sun by the end of summer it will all disappear. Well, we just aren’t going to wait that long.

Today, we moved the motor home to the other side of the drive and are tackling the remaining stain.

mh-moves

We scrubbed and scrubbed on our hands and knees using wire brushes and CLR for another four hours. Some people walked by and thought we were nuts! We kept hearing over and over…just let it be, it will go away. We thought…you better just go away!

paul-washing-driveway

This is the second, and third times in some areas, we went over the stained area. Any more scrubbing and we'll need back surgery again. I guess, it's as good as it's going to get.....at least until the bleaching of the summer sun. Hopefully by this time next year, it will be good as new.

We moved the MH back to its spot and set up again. We put boards and old rugs under the battery compartment area hoping we don't have any additional staining. Whew.....that was a BIG job!!!!

Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y’all back real soon. Have a great day!

A PARADE, NEW BIKE, NEW TIRES AND NEW TABLE…..WHEW $$$$$

Saturday, January 29 – Another busy day in paradise.....ha ha! Paul headed to Camping World after his morning bike ride. There's a couple items on sale, which ends Monday, that Paul wanted to check out. One item is tire covers for our new tires we'll be getting on Monday. The other item is a folding bike for Marsha. We picked up her current bike at a garage sale for $10, and it has a lot to be desired. Our neighbors here in Mission, welcomed us to try out their bikes, and we really liked them. The same bike is on sale, so Paul got Marsha an early anniversary present....or is it birthday, or valentine's day or Christmas....or is it, buy your wonderful wife a gift day. Yeah, that's it!  :=) We're going to put her old bike in the park-wide garage sale coming up in a couple weeks.

We then headed to downtown Mission for the Texas Citrus Fiesta. Marsha wanted to see some of the Parade of Oranges. It was very windy today!

marsha-with-group-of-outlow

We then went over to the mid-way to check out the carnival type food and the local renditions of carny food available.

They serve tons of corn-on-the-cob but with lots of hot sauce and salt. Very strange looking.

corn

Paul settled on his normal funnel cake, and Marsha had a sausage sandwich. Do you think a man who loves funnel cake would learn not to wear black…but NOOOOOO! Actually this picture really doesn’t do it justice. Marsha wiped over half of it off before she thought of taking a picture.

paul-black-shirt

We arrived plenty early to get a good spot for our chairs. After walking around the mid-way for awhile, we returned to our parade viewing spot.

paul-and-i-atparade

The place was getting crowded! After a pretty long wait, the parade began with the traditional police motorcycles and then the USA Flag. The parade had many local bands, floats from surrounding campgrounds and other business establishments....all decorated with oranges and this year's theme – “The Early Years of the Railroad”.

Of course…clowns

There were also dozens of young beautiful Latino Queens representing the many different citrus crops grown in the area. It was neat the way the girls were dressed. For example, Miss Ruby Red Grapefruit was dressed in a bright red gown riding in a corvette. Miss Navel Orange has on....what else, but a bright orange gown. Miss Honeydew wore a bright green gown. Get it???? Cute!

Marsha loved the article on the Royal Coronation in the local Winter Texan. It listed all the queens, king and ladies-in-waiting. Here is just a few…After King Citrus was crowned then came Queen Citrianna. Then The Princess of Grapefruit Blossom, Princess of Orange Blossom which followed by the Tangerine Court, and Princess of Lemon Blossom, Princess of Lime Blossom, Princess of Tangerine and Princess of Red Grapefruit Bloom. Remember this is only a “taste” of what the line up looks like. What a hoot!

After about an hour and a half of parade watching…more than Paul can usually endure…we returned to the Park to attend a party at the neighbors, Angie & Rick. It was attended by about a dozen neighbors and new friends. Fun!

Sunday, January 30
– After church, it was a nice relaxing day. Marsha took her new bike out for a spin.

That evening we went to see Norma and Donna’s new house. What a beautiful place!!! CONGRATULATIONS you two. The house sets on the 27 hole of the golf course. They have a fabulous view of the sunset. The sky is so awesome.

Monday, January 31 -
Paul took the MH in for new tires this morning. This is the first he moved the MH since December 28, when he arrived in Mission. Paul timed this tire installation at this time so he could exercise the MH drive train and generator after sitting for a month.

He took the MH to GCR here in Mission.

We got a very good price on Bridgestone R280 295/75 22.5; 16 ply tires that should serve us well for many, many years. These tires are a little larger and 16 ply rather than the previous 14 ply tires we had in the past. The installer – Rudy – worked very hard by himself for 3 hours installing the tires.

He was very experienced and Paul was very happy with the quality of his work......yep, I tipped him! They took the old tires for retreading and I should receive about $50 each by next week as a credit....Wonderful!!!

tires-for-retreds

Now that the MH has new shoes, Paul purchased tire covers to protect them, while sitting, from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. This supposedly prevents sidewall cracking and premature decomposing of the rubber. We'll only install the covers when we park for extended periods of time (a week or more).

Tuesday, February 1 – Our new dining room/kitchen table came today and Paul assembled it and put on several coats of polyurethane varnish to protect it. It is just the right size. It was difficult to find a small table, so we ordered one online. We only need to find two chairs and that will conclude our redecorating. So far, we are very pleased with the results.

Wednesday, February 2 – CRAZY, CRAZY, CRAZY weather blowing across the country and the Rio Grande Valley (RVG) isn't being spared. Temperatures dropped into the 30's last night and may reach the upper 20's tonight. Brrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Okay, Mother Nature, enough already.....check it out....it is colder in the Tropics of Mission, TX than in Canton, Ohio.....31 degrees here and 39 degrees in Canton.

mission-canton-temp

The good news is that it will be back in the 70's by the weekend. I guess I can live with two days of winter....ha ha!!!

Wasn't a great night for sleeping last night either. One of the annoying situations in an RV is that when wind blows is causes the awnings to flap like crazy. The constant flapping noise is not comforting. I suppose if they were covered with ice or snow they wouldn't flap ........oooooo Bite My Tongue!!!

Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see ya’ll back real soon. Have a great day!
