Tuesday, September 16 – We pulled up the jacks and pulled out of the driveway at 7:00 am this morning. We jumped on Interstate 77 South bound heading out of Ohio. Our Ford 350 did a great job with the mountains of West Virginia. We sure love the exhaust brake holding us back as we go down those mountains. We passed up the familiar exit to Virginia Tech, where I youngest daughter spent four wonderful years. We soon pulled into Fort Chiswell RV Park in Wytheville, VA.
We are in Site 63, a FHU site. The sites are a little close together for our liking and for the price. They are gravel with gravel streets. They sure pack this place at night. What a money pit!
After unhooking and getting set-up, we headed to the Visitor's Center in Wytheville. Wytheville is a nice little, historic town. We drove around to look at some of the historic homes and buildings. There is a very nice walking/riding tour of the area. Maps available at the visitor's center.
Clarence Trinkle House now Barnett Funeral Home
Wytheville is located on one of the primary routes used by settlers as they made their way West. The County Courthouse is an imposing Classical Revival building located in the center of town.
We strolled down the brick sidewalk of Church Street where numerous churches line the street among many historic homes.
Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1838
Wytheville Baptist Church, 1883
Above the “World Famous” Skeeter Hotdog Restaurant (We'll sample their dogs in the next couple of days.) is the birthplace of Edith Bolling Wilson. She became the wife of President Woodrow Wilson in 1915.
Of course, we had to stop and see the”big pencil.” The giant #2 pencil hangs on the front of the Wytheville Office Supply store downtown. And, you must go inside the store to see the giant pair of scissors.
We were both exhausted! We forgot how tiring this traveling lifestyle is. We're chilling out this evening to rest up for additional sightseeing and some hiking the next couple of days.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see y’all back real soon. Have a great day!
Love the giant pencil. I bet it get's used as a reference point an awfully lot. "Oh, just a block past the giant pencil"...

After months of planning I'm sure it feels good to be back on the road. It'll be a while before we get rolling.
ReplyDeleteBe Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
Even though it's worn you out.. .I know you are happy to be rolling again.
ReplyDeleteLove the Court House. . .really beautiful. . .
Continued safe travels and if you had passed up the pencil and scissors you wouldn't be so tired. You need to pace yourself, either pencil or scissors, not both.
ReplyDeleteThe pencil and scissors are Paul Bunyan-sized, not Paul Weaver-sized! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking your thrilled to be in vacation mode again. Virginia is filled with historical sites. It's such a fun state to visit. Well, with Justin there it's more fun than normal. Drive safe and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteWhen Hurricane Isabelle hit Virginia in 2003, we left the Richmond area and headed west to Wythville and stayed at Ft.Chiswell. Didn't have the toad with us so missed the sightseeing. It was really packed then also, since everyone all left from all the beach areas.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to be on the road again, enjoy the sights and sounds along the way.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're on the road again. There's a great restaurant in Mt. Airy (Mayberry) near you.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you are back out there. Travel safe my friends

ReplyDeleteWelcome to Virginia. Wyetheville is on my list of places to see. Not sure we'll get there or not so it's great to see this post. We have lots of family to see while we're here.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you back on the road. We've learned to pace ourselves. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe'll just be a week behind you though we're not yet taking time to sight see in that area. So glad to have you sharing your adventures there.
ReplyDeleteSo many places too see, welcome back to the road.
ReplyDeleteWhat? No giant eraser? :)
ReplyDeleteWe stayed at Fort Chiswell on our way to/from the Smokies ... slow both time so we didn't feel the tight squeeze. Interesting little town; we didn't go into to explore since we were dead tired both times we were in the area, so I appreciate the tour.
