BIGGEST GOLF DRIVING RANGE WE HAVE EVER SEEN

Saturday, March 23 – Our final stop on our Treasures of Houston tour was the largest golf driving range we've ever seen!

This 3-story driving range had it all. Indoor & outdoor bars, over 200 TV sets, pool tables, shuffle board, lounge areas, private party areas and of course, 3 floors of gold tees.

Participants pay by the hour and can hit as many balls as you like in that time. The cost is $20 during the week and $40 weekends and high volume times. There are electronic scoring machines and different target areas to hit your balls toward. Check out the HUGE screen used to keep the balls in the playing area.

Carrie's gang of friends were meeting here for the afternoon and chipping in to pay for the party area.

Carrie tried it twice. She needs some work on her swing as it looks more like she is hitting a softball than a golf ball.

We hung out with them for a couple hours and then headed back to the Elks Lodge.

The Elks Lodge was having a dance tonight, and we decided to attend to say “good-bye” to the friends we've made here at the Lodge. Since we stay here frequently, we've managed to become friends with many of the members and others that stay in the campground. We had a great time and got to get a little 2-steppin' in before leaving Texas.

HIDDEN TREASURES IN HOUSTON, TEXAS

Saturday, March 23 – Don't let the title fool you. Marsha loves to go exploring roadside wonders.  The treasurer is in the eye of the beholder.

Being our last day in Houston, we spent it with Carrie. We started with a stop at the Beer Can House.

John Milkovisch  is responsible for this one of a kind property.  This project, now known as the Beer Can House, started in 1968, when he began inlaying thousands of marbles, rocks, and metal pieces into concrete and redwood to form unique landscaping features. He did it because he "got sick of mowing the grass."

He then began adding aluminum siding – aluminum beer can siding, that is, to his house. It took him 18 years to make the house disappeared under a cover of flattened beer cans. Also, there are beer can fences, beer cans hanging from the roof, beer can mailbox, everywhere beer cans.

There are many different types of beer that John, himself, drank (though his neighbors and his wife, Mary, were always glad to lend a hand!).

You could even get a guided tour for $5.00, We passed on that. It was surprising how many people were stopping to see this place. Bet the neighbors love having this located on their street. Ha Ha!

We then drove a short distance to the Painted Railroad Cars.

This is actually someone's law office. The fence is made from old RR wheels and rails, and there are appropriate lawn sculptures scattered around.

We then took a break for lunch at the Black Walnut Cafe.

This was a great lunch stop. The girls had soup and salad, and Paul enjoyed French toast and eggs (gotta' love breakfast anytime of the day). Everything was so delicious. Carrie picked up the tab making it extra enjoyable......thanks sweetie! We highly recommend this place anytime of the day.

ST. PATTY'S DAY CELEBRATION

Saturday, March 16 – Carrie arranged for us to join her friends at a local bar to help the Irish celebrate St. Paddy's Day.

These young folks sure know how to celebrate. It's exhausting just trying to keep up! We spent several hours listening to the bands, talking with Carrie's friends, and drinking green beer.

Soon it was obvious that time had arrived for the “old guys” to hit the road. Don't want to hamper the young peoples' style, you know. Had a good time and headed home to watch some NCAA basketball.

The Big Dance, NCAA Tournament, should be exciting with many equally good teams fighting for the National Championship. This is an exciting time of the year for college basketball fans. We will be pulling for Ohio State. Good luck, Shoeless Joe, with your Indiana Hoosiers.
