MORE WINE TASTING IN HILL COUNTRY

Tuesday, March 5 – We moved about 50 miles up the road today to the Fredericksburg, TX area. We are staying in the Peach Country RV Park in Stonewall, TX. This is a small town between Fredericksburg and Johnson City, TX. We will be here five nights. Last time, fall of 2010, we were in Hill Country, we stayed at Lady Bird Johnson State Park, a really nice park. Unfortunately, they were completely booked with no sites available.

Peach Country RV is also a nice park. It has WIDE gravel roads, gravel sites, mostly pull-thru sites, concrete pads with picnic tables at each site, a nice activity center, and lots of grassy areas. They also have a 10% Good Sam discount. Our Good Sam/Camping World membership was expired as of February 28 so we renewed it here in the campground office. It cost $20 to renew our membership. We saved $15 on the 5 nights stay. Almost saved our renewal cost in one stay. Cool!

After getting setup in our campsite, we decided to visit the Woodrose Winery. We are located on TX-290 which is Winery Row here in Hill Country. There are more than a dozen wineries in this area. Didn't know Texas was such a wine producing state.

The Woodrose Winery is very nice. We had the tasting in the dance hall (fitting for cowboy country). Instead of sitting or standing at a tasting bar, we sat at a dinner table and the wine steward brought the bottles of wine to our table.

We sampled six wines and purchased one bottle. We cheated a little by tasting the wines at the winery and then stopping at Walmart to purchase the same wine at about half the price. Walmart has many of the local wines, so we may return to purchase others.

That was the end of our touring for the day. We returned to the CG to relax, take Bella out for a walk, and for Marsha to work on making her baskets. Its a little windy in the area, so Bella and Paul didn't last long outdoors in the cold breeze. Bella wanted to get indoors to bug Marsha trying to do her baskets.

APPLE PIE ONLY $24.95 EACH

Monday, March 4 – We walked around Bandera, TX, today.

Even though the sign says it and it is written on their website, we cannot find out why Bandera is called the Cowboy Capital of the World.

We enjoyed strolling among the stores looking at the items for sale.

If you visit here, don't miss Back in the Saddle Unique Boutique. What a store. It is packed with just about anything a girl would want. An unique is a perfect word to describe this store.

Some other sites you will see in Bandera.

It really doesn't take long to complete a thorough walk-about of Bandera. Not many interesting shops, mostly touristy stuff and antique stores.

We then drove out to Medina, TX, to visit The Apple Store.

We were here in 2010. It is known for amazing hamburgers, baked goods, and their patio cafe. We split a hamburger and soft drink, saving our calories for some delicious apple bakery items. The burger was great.

The Store specializes in apple pies. They are HUGE! Each pie contains 5 pounds of apples, and they sell for $24.94 EACH.

The gal at the oven said they make 25-100 pies each day (weekends are especially busy) and ship them all over the United States.

Needless to say, we did not buy a pie. Instead, we purchased an apple and raisin cookie and two apple turnovers. They were delicious.

SCULPTURE PRAYER GARDEN

Saturday, March 2 - Our next stop on Saturday was Kerrville, TX. We really just drove through this town. It's not a touristy town like Bandera and Boerne. We did stop to see the “Coming King” Sculpture Prayer Garden.

This garden is currently under construction. It is being built by donations without any debt or professional fund raising. Over $2,000,000 has been spent so far and another $3,000,000 worth of monumental Christian sculptures have been donated by three international artists. There is a lot of empty space waiting for someone to donate.

The main attraction is a 77' high steel cross high above I-10 called "The Empty Cross."

It's a pretty impressive place and will be amazing when it is finally finished. That may be sometime in the future by the looks of things.

Our last stop of the day was the Copper Cactus.

We stopped at this eclectic little artist shop back in 2010 and Paul wanted to stop again to see the collection of Mexican tin work, pottery, collectables, and art work by the husband & wife owners. We were a little disappointed this time. It was a little low on inventory and just didn't seem the exciting stop we remembered.

There is something about roosters in this area.

We did make a couple of purchases. Marsha picked-up a new Mexican pot for her cactus back home in Ohio. Paul got a deal on a metal cowboy sculpture he intends to tuck somewhere in the backyard at home. No one in the neighborhood will have anything like it.
